ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO IV
Architecture Design Studio IV emphasizes on “engaging environment and community”, the studio explores design by harnessing environmental qualities through projects with a specific community of users within a given context. The projects involve studies of precedents that showcases responses to environmental conditions and sustainable issues as well as innovative interpretations of the given program. Considerations should be given to the complexity of the program, site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and the site, and provide meaningful architectural experience for the community of users.
Learning Outcomes
1. Identify and analyze environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site
2. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability
3. Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context (harness environmental qualities of the site to inform design) which impact on users’ experiences
4. Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.
5. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modeling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology
PROJECT 1 - RE-PLAY (PLAYSCAPE)
13th Sept 2018
Initiating the exploration of ‘Leisure and Architecture’ Project 1 deals with the basic action of ‘play’ and leisure at the smallest scale through the understanding of re purposed materials and their relationship to the crafting of spaces for children experience
In a group of 3, we come out with the concept which is to let the playscape serves as an experimental ground for kinesthetic sense in children so that the children can be more familiar with their body and muscular motion. They will be abale to explore and release their creativity in the playscape through various levels that encourages them to develop their own thoughts by expressing their motion across the playscape.
In order to evoke their kinesthetic sense, we have suggested some activities such as play tage, balancing, climbing and sliding.

PROJECT 2- HOUSE OF LEISURE
Furthering the exploration of ‘Leisure and Architecture’, the project calls for the design of a COMMUNITY RECREATION within an urban park environment. Students are required to provide full design proposals incorporating findings from precedent study and site analysis. Students will generate concepts that respond to context and leisurerelated programs and explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing clustered spatial typology and passive design strategies. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with the context and provide interesting spatial experience for the users through sensitive and thoughtful architectural intervention.
The site given is D.R. Seenivasagam Park which is located in Ipoh. Before we start to design, we have a site visit to this park and analyse the site accordingly. We look into the park's history, circulation, climate, vegetation, demography, views and vistas in order to come out with a suggestion on which programme is suitable for the house of leisure designed.
By having these analysis,I have come out with the idea by designing a community building for art in Ipoh. For this art, I want an active and passive component especially the young more attracted to this. For this, I need a sculptural painting and performance art. To do that, I need to create 2 spaces to reflect different types of activities - one passive and one active.
In between this active and passive activity, I want to create outdoor spaces, connecting spaces which people can spill out into and create a sharing spaces.
At the end of the journey, I want to create another sharing space but sharing with the community to showcase that they have cultivated or learn in this centre.
On top of that all, to make this connect back to the community more, I want to make the building more accessible to public. So I make more public space at the ground area where they can have a communal style gathering. For example, art market or showcase of performances during the evening
