WEEK ONE
The intention of Community Service Inititative (CSI) module is to reveal students to the real community and work as a team of architectural, culture and environmental enhancing activities in the community background of different social economic status and social groups. By using our knowledge - what we have learnt throughout the semesters, we are required to solve the real life problem by understanding the needs of community more in depth in order to ensure a workable and functional design. In group of 8 from school of architecture ,Kelvin Douglas, Ariventhar, Calvin Ong, Laisa, Kirthanaa, Ranjeev, Qhalis and I and also 2 students from school of education, Manwin Kaur and Kaveeta having opportunity to work with each other. We are given 3 options to choose from, either Kebun-kebun Bangsar, Experiential Market @ REX KL, or PPR Seri Berembang“In search of Learning Space”. The objective to be achieved for each beneficiary varies. After a short discussion, we opt for PPR Seri Berembang Project instead, as it is a scheduled project.
About PPR Seri Berembang Project: Taman Seri Berembang Flats are low cost flats located in Port Klang. The units are about 650sqft each. Residents from these flats are facing difficulties to establish a study corner for their kids. In collaboration with Urbanice Malaysia, students from SABD are engaged to help the residents to create a study space for their kids. We also aim to promote the idea of minimalism to the residents; where more space can be created by discarding the old junk and stuffs.
First Site Visit: We are given different time slots to select for our first visit to the site ever. This is to minimize noise effect caused to the residents over there. My team and I visited the site for the first time, and conducted a site analysis to understand our site better. The analysis was carried out efficiently as tasks were delegated clearly prior to the visit. The site was a single house unit in PPR Seri Berembang Flat occupied by a family of 7 ; 2 adults and 5 children. The owner of the house named Rajeswari is a mother of 5 children age ranged from 12 - 3 and her husband is a lorry driver who seldom be in the house due to his outstation work. As per the brief's task, we are required to create a study/learning space for the children and on our first visit of the house we discussed the potential space in the house to be the study/learning space for the children and we also measured the space to draft the idea for the learning space. To me, the site is relatively well-maintained. You get to see a void or a community sharing space at the center between two blocks. I also felt surprised by the good condition of the flat, especially when we are in a heavily modernized urban city.
WEEK TWO - FIVE
We continue to discuss further about the selection of the space, what does we want the kids to feel while they study in that space, the furniture that they need and how to accommodate according to their needs. We started to work on the proposals that we need to present in front of our lecturers to get their feedback regarding our ideas for the study/learning space. Below is the slide of our proposal :
WEEK SIX - SEVEN
Since our proposal did not get a good feedback from the lecturers, we had to reconstruct our idea in terms of the space that we choose and the furniture's materials. Initially we decided to create the study/learning space in the living room with a partition wall that separates the activity but now we choose the prayer room beside the kitchen as it is more secluded from the living area. And also, we planned to construct the table but due to money constraints, we had to change the plan to Ikea tables which are less expensive and user friendly. We went to Ikea to check the items and the prices and it seems that it fitted the budget that we had. Besides that, we also planned to paint the room because of the unsuitable color of the previous paint for a study/learning space. We also inquired on other handy things that we can help them on. On week 7 when we had a tutorial session with our tutor, we got a green light to proceed with our plans.

WEEK EIGHT - NINE
We started off with the purchase of the furniture and paints and then we head on to the house to start the work. We started to paint the room and as we continued we realized that the paint was not enough for the whole. So we assembled the furniture and left. On week 9, we came back to finish the paint job and arranged the furniture in the room. Besides that, as for the substitute place for the prayer altar, we purchase a floating shelf to be attached on the wall. We also finished attached the shelf as well. Once the work is done, we felt that one table was not enough for the 4 children to study the so we decided to purchase another small table to enhance the capacity of users for the table. We had to consult our tutor for the plan so that our tutor is aware of what were happening.
WEEK TEN - ELEVEN
This is the final week to complete our task for the study/learning space for the house. We purchased extra mini table and two more chairs for them. Other than that, we also did some maintenance work such as fixing the electric wires that do not work and also fixing the cracked walls. After done with the all the works, we asked the family host about their satisfaction of the work. Week 11 is the submission of our video.
