ARCHITECTURE DESIGN PROJECT
Semester 6 forms the culmination of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Architecture programme. This capstone project is based on the theme of architecture with a social impact and the resolution and integration of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design. Progressing from the urban issues of urban street environment, the design studio extends students development of architectural position and design brief in proposing strategy to resolving social issues pertinent within the conditions of the urban landscape (for example, elderly, neglected communities, school, youth center, woman empowerment, skills training center and others).

PROJECT 1 - PRELIMINARY STUDIES
The Preliminary Studies is a preparatory assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city, and learning from examples of community library around the world. This assignment aims to firstly introduce students to the basics in urban design and its relation to architecture, and secondly, studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a community library and architectural responses for urban infills.
Objectives of the Project :
-
Develop a simple brief for an architectural design project
-
Conduct pre-design analyse to inform the design project Learning Outcomes of this Project 1.
-
Formulate a simple brief that include appropriate architectural programme and planning within a selected architectural context .
-
Analyse case studies to gain understanding of architectural responses and strategies of an intentional design strategy to inform the design project.
-
Conduct contextual and user analysis in the pre-design phase.
-
Project Details :
Pre-design analysis, is where students will assemble all the parts and pieces of the bigger picture.
-
Reviewing building code and local or city ordinance,
-
Initiative on establishing design parameters,
-
Take initiative consider and study solar analysis and other site specific analysis,
-
Research on precedents or do actual visitation to projects related and directly relevant to the proposal andResearch on demography, user profile and understanding who we are designing for.

PROJECT 2- CITY LOBBY CENTRE
Apart from developing a narrative on architectural strategy in response to the relevant questions pertaining to community and its context, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental requirements to address the user needs. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.
Objectives of the Project :
-
To take into consideration key aspects of urban design and context in relation to architecture.
-
To develop an awareness and basic compliance to Design Codes and Statutory Requirements.
-
To emphasize the importance of elevational context and composition in developing architectural design.
-
To implement and explore the conceptual, schematic and design development phases in an architectural design project.
Project Details :
Building on design brief and pre-analysis of context, user and programme presented in Project 1a, design a building that delivers a strong relationship to place, people and time.
It is imperative for your design to be environmentally sustainable and be knowledgeable of the materials, services and construction systems employed in the building, while adhering in principle to regulatory by- laws (UBBL) and fire regulation.
The building must be no larger than 2,400 sq.mts. and no lesser than 2,000sq.mts. built in minimum of 3 levels but not higher than 5 levels which includes at the covered circulation.
