BUILDING STRUCTURE

The module covers the principles and behavior of structural forces and components, which includes trusses, slabs, beams and columns. It also introduces students to structural design, structural analysis, load calculations and diagrams. These knowledge are important for students in producing architectural designs which are aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound.

PROJECT 1 - STRUCTURAL DESIGN POST MORTEM

Structural design is part of the general design problems. In reality, it can be regarded as one of the most important design problems as it deals with life safety of the building occupants. You can design an architecturally beautiful building but if the structural design fails then the building would totally fail to the extent it will cause fatality. On the other hand, if you design an unattractive building but with sound structural system then at least you can be sure that the building occupants are safe. One of the reasons students normally design irrational and uneconomical buildings is lack of basic understanding of structural theory and structural behavior. As a result, the structural design is often left as an afterthought rather than incorporated into the design process. This assignment was designed to help students to better understand and appreciate structural design and hopefully to integrate this knowledge into their designs in the future.

PROJECT 2 - STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF A BUNGALOW

Structural analysis is crucial in determining the appropriate sizes of structural components such as beams, columns and footings, which involves quantification of the total load transferred to the components. As architects, we need to know the process of load transfer and distribution in a building as well as the process of structural analysis to understand the basic works of the engineer. With that, hopefully architects would produce better designs with more consideration towards the structural components. This assignment is designed to gauge the students’ knowledge and understanding of the main topics in this module; slab, beams and columns, as it integrates structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal.
