BUILDING CONSTRUCTION II

by Dr. Sujatavani Gunasagaran

This subject aims to introduce structures as architecture by developing an understanding of the structural systems in construction technology in a unique way in relation to historical and innovate buildings. Skeletal, solid and surface construction systems are discussed and analyzed in terms of load and forces in a general term

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify basic structural systems in construction

2. Recognize the implication of construction systems in design

3. Able to compare the different type of construction system

4. Apply construction systems in design

5. Differentiate construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on its structural elements

6. Analyze the issues of strength , stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

PROJECT 1-SKELETAL CONSTRUCTION

8th May 2018

In a group of 6, we are asked to build a scale 1:5 temporary bus shelter to show our understanding towards basic construction. In this project, I've learned to apply construction systems in design and analysed the issues of strength, stiffness and stability.

Objectives of the Project :

  • To create an understanding of skeletal structure and its relevant structural components .

  • To understand how a skeletal structure reacts under loading.

  • To demonstrate a convincing understanding of how skeletal construction works.

  • To be able to manipulate skeletal construction to solve an oblique design problem.

Project Details :
Form a group of six people. Our task is to construct a temporary bus shelter.
Build a 1:5 scale model of the shelter with A3 bound report complete with visuals, sketches and inclusive of the detailing and progressive documentation of the project.

PROJECT 2 - UNDERSTANDING FORCES IN B.CON

13th June 2018

A building normally comprises of several different types of constructional systems, either due to its function or building code requirements. As designers, it is very important that you understand when and where each of the different type of constructional system is used.

Objectives of the Project :

  • To create an understanding of building components used and its assembly.

  • To demonstrate good drawing skills in building details and how it reacts under loading and force.

  • To be able to manipulate the selection of materials used and ensure its buildability.

Project Details :
Describe each structural system identified in terms of Function, Material and Load Distribution. Produce a model on an A3 base showing the structural systems used in the above building. A detailed model showing appropriate constructional joints is encouraged.
